Dave Shorten arrived at the game in high spirits, having thrown some money at the problem of his batting. Apparently, there’s a bloke with a barn out near Thame somewhere who for £30 will tell you to plant your back foot and watch the ball. Well bugger me, it really is that simple, as he opened the batting with Howarth and was looking good for a swift 30 and retire before being bowled by King on 31 (heaving across the line).

The match had a curious start with S Morton flinging down a frightening maiden, whilst at the other end O Morton was struggling with his radar. Even the ones near the target were going past the wicket keeper, such that 22 came off the second over. With the score on 30, only eight runs had come off the bat and extras was looking a shoe in for MOTM. The opening partnership of 75 (Howarth 24) must be a club record for games with a compulsory retirement at 30.

The departure of both openers introduced a succession of single figures as The MAD slumped from 75-0 to 105-8. Pick of the incompetents was James Pearson running himself out on zero. Only Bob (13) exited with any dignity after complaining about being pushed up the order from 11 to 9, he backed up his claim for a higher berth by ending his brief innings with a very Darleyesque 4, 6, out. The MAD had somehow stumbled to providing exactly 100 runs off the bat, with a more than useful 26 coming in extras. Towards the end of the innings, the leaden skies started to emit a light drizzle, which soon turned in to a heavy drizzle and then proper rain. Being the proper cricketing idiots we all are, thoughts of Wootton and Bladon circa 2013 were cast aside as the teams continued to trash the strip.

After a brief interval and an easing of the rain, W&BH started their response and were pegged back in the first couple of overs by Reeves (3-1-13-2) and Roberts (3-0-21-0). Reeves producing a rare MOTM performance for dismissing the two openers.

The match changed with the introduction of Proctor (35 retd) and S Morton (36 retd), with the latter sending what appeared to be defensive prods flying over the boundary, such was his timing. During this carnage Howarth earned The MAD moment for climbing over a gate which was in fact unlocked. If only it had swung open with him still aboard, in true comic fashion. Corne earned the Champagne and almost simultaneously The MAD moment for a truly remarkable stop on the boundary with the back of his ankle. Even Thorn would have marvelled at that one. One low moment was Bob injuring his shoulder with an athletic stop in the outfield. We wish you a speedy recovery fella.

In the end W&BH romped to victory with three overs to spare. The MAD had managed 7 wickets with a damp and swelling ball. Well done W&BH for not being too precious about the pitch and allowing the game to happen. I’m off to see a man with a barn.
