2018 Friendly Cup – Final Round Results

272 - 4

A. Darley  2 - 43,  J. Newman  2 - 76

C. Williams  43,  R. Hadfield  23

Moreton CC won by 96 runs

This was between Far from the MCC and Moreton CC at Horspath CC’s ground. Conditions were conducive to cricket, friendly teams, bar, nice tea and pleasantly warm weather. Oh, there was a good wicket and outfield too! Moreton won the toss and decided to bat.

Moreton made a bad start, in the seventh over losing their second wicket for only 17 runs. This was largely due to opening bowler Andy Darley who took the two opener’s wickets for only 5 runs in his opening 5 over spell! However, Moreton’s three & four batsmen, brothers Tom & Will Macdonald, batted carefully and gradually increased the score to a healthy 78 for 2 at the half way point of the innings. Tom and Will gradually upped the scoring rate until they both fell to bowling of Jon Newman-Robson – they were both caught by Ian Howarth at long off from consecutive balls. But the damage was done to FFTMCC as their partnership was 215. Tom scored 112 & Will 104. Father Chris Macdonald (not a priest, but Tom and Will’s dad!) then kept the spectators on their toes with sixes in a quick innings of 35 runs, not out. Moreton enjoyed their tea on 272 for 4! FFTMCC enjoyed a beer.

The second innings: FFTMCC batted with great spirit & were always ahead of the required run rate until the 32nd over and at 100 for 3 at 20 overs things looked promising. Chris Williams batted well for 43. Richard Hadfield was unlucky to be run out for 23 by a direct hit from Tom Macdonald. However, wickets fell steadily, Will Macdonald taking 4 for 17 & FFTMCC were all out for 176 in the 35th over.
